Formulating questions

Today our buddy class helped us think of our questions for our action learning. We thought about what we want to find out about the early settlers and our buddies turned them into questions for us.  Over the next few weeks we will be researching the answers to these questions in our topic time!

New Lynn Library

The Children’s Librarian at New Lynn Library has a very special certificate for any Ara Teina child who says, “Hello” to her at the library. Make sure you visit the wonderful New Lynn Library by the New Lynn Train Station.

Carrot Party

WOW what fantastic cooks and bakers we all are! We had a great Carrot party after lunch today and enjoyed all the fabulous food we brought in. It was great sharing what we had made with everyone.
After we had finished eating (and cleaning up!!!) we sat down and wrote a story together about our "Carrot Feast":

"Today we had a carrot feast. It was messy and scrumptious!"

We also came up with some great descriptive words like: Delicious, fantastic, yummy, creamy, chocolatey and awesome!

Picking our carrots

Wednesday 22 May 2013

Uh Oh!

Oh dear! Today it rained A LOT during the morning. At morning tea it was sunny so we went out to play. When we got back to class a few of us were VERY wet from various playground incidents and we couldn't get changed because we had forgotten our change of clothes..

Please can you pack us a spare top and pants so that if this happens again over winter we don't have to be wet and dirty for the rest of the day!
Thanks!!

Maori Homework

Over the next few weeks we will be learning about our whakapapa, whanau/family and where we come from.
We will then be writing our mihi and pepeha to present to the class.
Tonight and tomorrow can you please talk to us about our own family - who are our brothers and sisters / who are our Grandparents/ Auntys and Uncles (which are mum and dad's brothers and sisters) if we have any great grandparents, etc.
Thanks!!!

Pencil Grip

We are working very hard on our pencil grip. If we are writing at home please check we are holding our pencils correctly!

Lock Down Drill

Today we had a lock down drill - which we use if there is someone or something dangerous in our school.
We closed our curtains and shut and locked our doors so that we kept safe. Then we all sat together and were quiet.
2 boys from Room 2 were visiting us at the time so they joined us and read our big book.
Our teachers thought that we did a great job!

Gymnastics

Today we went to the hall with Room 21 and practised our gymnastics! We jumped off all different things and from lots of different heights! We made sure we bent our legs when we landed.

Working Bee

We are having a working bee next Wednesday 29th of May. We would like as many parents and children as possible to help with planting native trees, fertilising and many other things in the grounds of Arahoe School. If you are free, please turn up after school at 3:15pm outside the office to help out. Please bring a spade, gardening tools, gloves and outdoor footwear. Thank you so much for any support you can give! Fleur Tuck

The pencils writing group

Today the "pencils" group: Ethan, Leandro, Mira, Cherry and Kayla did some awesome writing. We were learning to read back our story. To get 3 stamps we had to draw a matching picture, point to the words and look for words we know. Listen to Kayla's story and look for the 3 stamps!

Friday's Parade

On Friday we got dressed in our Settlers outfits and paraded around the hall to show the rest of the school what Room 1 and Room 22 will be learning this term. Playing in the background is the song '6 months in a leaky boat' We are learning this song when we visit Mrs Sadgrove for Music.

Howick historical village trip

A HUGE thanks to our parent helpers who helped make this trip happen!

We started the day in an old fashioned school setting, writing on slates and sitting in rows. Then learnt some old songs and nursery rhymes! After lunch we got to look around the village and see what life was like for the early settlers! Here are a few photos, tune in later in the week for a movie/slide show!

Wink and blink

Our poem this week is called "wink and blink".
We looked at words that end in -ink and today we used our Casey shapes to form the letters and fill in the gaps! We also learnt a winking game, where you have to guess the person who is winking and making everyone fall asleep! It was a lot of fun.

Eden was the winner when she winked at everyone and made them fall asleep before she got spotted!

Jump Jam Star .....

Today our jump jamming star is Bridget!! Well done. Keep up those groovy moves!

Stars Homework

Some Homework for our Stars maths group (Eden, Macy, Harpar, Liam and Jayden)

- WALT add and subtract numbers to 5 using one hand.

Make up some word stories that involve numbers to 5 - children are only allowed to use one hand to find the answer.

Start easy e.g. Liam had 2 lollies, Jayden gave him 2 more how many lollies does Liam have now?
Write down 2 + 2 =

Also for - 2 + 3, 4 +1, 5 - 3, 4-2 etc

Next make it harder and take out the middle number

e.g Eden had 2 library books she went to the library and got some more out, now she has 4 how many books did Eden get out?

1 + _ = 4, 4 - _ = 2 etc

Sunday 12 May 2013

Numbers to 20

The circles are learning about numbers to 20. This morning Miss Macartney wrote on the floor all these numbers! We had fun racing to them!!

Reading

This term we are focusing on working very hard on our reading to move up our caterpillar. Our guided reading sessions with our teachers will be more intense working on filling in our learning gaps. Because of this we will be bringing home two books that we have read with our teachers and another two that we have read before and picked for ourselves.
Thanks for all your help!

Great Work Eden

Well done Eden who received our certificate at assembly this week!

Assembly speakers

We had some very clever people talk about what we are studying this term at assembly this morning!
Harpar told everyone about what we are learning. (Early NZ Settlers)
Mira said who our buddy class was. (Room 1)
Jayden explained what we already knew about Settlers. (ask us)
Bronagh shared how excited we were about our new topic.
Well done, we think you did a great job!!!

Dress up

For our trip to Howick Historical Village next week it has been decided that we dress up in 'olden day gear' for the occasion! So get out your bonnets, neck scarves, long dresses and 3/4 pants for a day of fun activities!!

Wednesday 8 May 2013

As requested by Jayden ...

This afternoon, just before the bell went, we watched a snippet of a video of some shadow dancing. The dancers are behind a screen and they make their shadows into different shapes to tell a story.

Trip Reminder

We still have a few outstanding permission slips and money due, please bring these in tomorrow.

The weather man!

Each morning we choose a new person to help us with the calendar and weather. This morning it was Josh.. Who will it be tomorrow?

Change to our URL

Hi all,

As you may have noticed we are now Room 22 but our blogs website still is arahoeroom19. From next week we will be changing this to arahoeroom22. Please let all whanau and friends know about this change so that everyone can still keep in touch. You will still also be able to access our blog through the schools ultranet.

Thanks,

Imogen and Sarah.

Our Reading Caterpillar

Our caterpillar shows us what level we are reading at and what our goal is by the end of term 2. The white name is where we are reading at the beginning of the term. The blue name is our goal.

We are all aiming to get to green level by the end of our first year at school (this is the national standard). Please ask us about where our names are and where we are aiming to get to next! We have decided to work hard at school and home to achieve our goals.

Monday 6 May 2013

Mimio Maths

Today the triangles showed their before and after number knowledge using a dice on the mimio (interactive whiteboard). It was a lot of fun. Evie had to stretch her arms to reach!

Carrots

Our carrots have grown madly over the holidays! We are hoping to pick them soon. Come and have a look at them in the garden.

Wow week

This week we are getting a taste of what each class will be learning this term for our school show! Every afternoon we visit a different class and participated in fun activities. We started with our class, Room 22. We will be learning about settlers to New Zealand.
